Halloween is the perfect time to transform into your favourite character, but some costume accessories can be more trick than treat, especially cosmetic contact lenses. While coloured or decorative lenses may look cool, they carry serious risks if not used correctly.
“Costume contact lenses are not just a fashion accessory; they’re medical devices. Wearing the wrong lenses, or misusing them, can lead to serious eye infections and even permanent vision damage,” said Isaac Curkpatrick, State Lead (Victoria) & National Professional Services Advisor at Optometry Australia.
Australian research highlights the risk
Research from Australia shows just how common these risks are.
A study by UNSW Sydney and international collaborators found that people who wear reusable contact lenses (which include most cosmetic contact lenses) are nearly four times more likely to develop severe eye infections, such as Acanthamoeba keratitis, compared to those using daily disposable lenses.
Many costume lens users also neglect proper hygiene, including reusing lenses or cleaning them with non-sterile water and not sterile multipurpose solution, which further increases the likelihood of infection.
Compounding the problem, a large proportion of cosmetic lenses are sold online or through market stalls without professional assessments and prescriptions, meaning there is no guarantee they are safe, sterile or even the correct size for your eyes.
“Every year, we see a spike in eye injuries around Halloween. It often starts with minor irritation, but left untreated, it can quickly become an infection that’s painful and potentially damaging to your sight.”
The dangers of poorly fitting lenses
Wearing poorly fitted or unregulated lenses can lead to eye infections, corneal scratches or ulcers, reduced oxygen supply to the eyes, and in severe cases, permanent vision damage.
How to wear costume lenses safely
If you are set on wearing coloured or decorative lenses, the safest approach is to see an optometrist first.
“A proper fitting and professional advice can make all the difference. Optometrists can make sure lenses are safe for your eyes and provide advice on correct hygiene and wear.”
Other safety tips include:
- Only purchase TGA-listed lenses from licensed optometrists or reputable retailers
- Follow strict hygiene guidelines for cleaning and storing lenses
- Avoid water exposure while wearing lenses
- Dispose of lenses after use
- Never share lenses or attempt to modify them
- Remove them before sleep
Protect your eyes this Halloween
Your eyes are delicate and irreplaceable and unsafe contact lenses can cause long-term harm.
“If your eyes become sore, red, or blurry after wearing lenses, remove them immediately and see an optometrist. With the right precautions, you can enjoy your Halloween look safely and avoid turning a fun night into a painful experience.”
