World Wellbeing Week: why your eyes deserve a seat at the head of the healthcare table

Over the past decade, we’ve levelled up when it comes to wellbeing and preventative healthcare; there’s apps that track our sleep, green powders that promise to fix everything, therapy as self-care and boundaries like “I can’t, I’ve got Pilates.”

But one crucial piece still tends to get left behind: our eyes.

As we mark World Wellbeing Week (24–30 June), it’s time to bring eye health into the wellbeing conversation.

Your eyes aren’t just there for the vibes

Did you know your optometrist can pick up on issues that go way beyond eyesight, including early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even some neurological conditions?

These are the kinds of things you want caught early. You don’t need to be seeing “floaters”, squinting to read road signs or getting headaches to pay your optom a visit because eye exams aren’t just for when something’s wrong.

They’re part of baseline healthcare just like skin checks, pap smears, blood tests and dentist visits.

Digital life is destroying your eye comfort

Let’s be real – too many of us spend too much time online; screens at work, screens at home, screens for parenting hacks, Pinterest dinner inspo, group chats and just being a human in 2025.

This kind of digital load wasn’t built into our biology. And your eyes are showing the strain.

If you’ve ever dealt with:

  • Dry, gritty, irritated eyes
  • That weird pressure-y headache behind your eyes at 4pm
  • Blurry vision that clears when you blink
  • That feeling like your eyes just can’t anymore

…you’re probably experiencing digital eye strain.

An optometrist can help you manage it – you don’t have to just put up with it.

Uncorrected vision can mess with your wellbeing more than you think

Good vision isn’t a luxury—it’s a core part of how you show up in the world. Blurry or uncorrected vision can quietly chip away at your quality of life.

We hear things like:

“I just thought I was tired all the time.”
“I was getting tension headaches but didn’t realise it was my eyes.”
“I’d stopped driving at night without really noticing.”
“I didn’t realise how much clearer things could look.”

When you can’t see clearly, you’re putting your brain under strain. That translates into fatigue, brain fog, mood dips and even sleep issues (especially if your eyes are overstimulated right up until bedtime).

Getting your vision sorted is like switching your brain from dial-up to high-speed.

There’s a confidence boost in clear vision

If you’re feeling off, your vision might be a hidden part of that. Whether it’s needing glasses and not realising, struggling to focus on text, avoiding night driving or just feeling less “on”, it’s worth checking in on your eyes.

When your vision is sharp, comfortable and effortless, everything else feels smoother. Your confidence lifts. Your energy returns. You literally see the world more clearly.

What’s the next move?

It’s 2025. We know wellness is more than green juice and gym memberships. Let’s put eye health where it belongs: on your wellbeing radar. Book in for an eye exam today.
