Ask An Optom: what are the hidden dangers of wearing novelty contact lenses this spooky season?

Hey guys and ghouls! It’s that spook-tacular time of year again and, while we know Halloween is all about creating the perfect spooky costume, improper use of coloured or novelty contact lenses can pose serious risks to your ocular health.

Yes, they may help take your look from meek to eeek but the toll they can take on the eyes is scarier stuff indeed.

We spoke to Katherine Whittaker, optometrist and National Professional Services Advisor at Optometry Australia to discuss the dangers of dodgy novelty contact lenses and how to avoid a frightful fallout for your eyes.

What are novelty contact lenses?

Novelty contact lenses, also known as decorative or cosmetic lenses, are designed to change the appearance of your eyes. They come in various colours, patterns and effects, such as glowing eyes, cat-eye pupils or even black-out lenses. While these lenses may not correct vision, they must be treated with the same level of care as prescription lenses.

The risks of wearing novelty contact lenses

One of the biggest issues with novelty contact lenses is that they are often sold without proper regulation. In Australia, contact lenses are considered medical devices and must be dispensed by a licensed optometrist.

However, many people purchase novelty lenses online or from costume shops, where the lenses may not meet safety standards.

Here are some of the key risks involved:

  • Poorly made or contaminated lenses can introduce bacteria or fungi into your eye, leading to serious infections like keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). If left untreated, these infections can cause permanent vision loss
  • Contact lenses that don’t fit properly can scratch the surface of your eye (the cornea) and cause abrasions. This not only causes pain but also increases your risk of infection
  • Contact lenses that are not made from breathable materials can reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches your cornea. This can lead to corneal swelling, discomfort and long-term eye health problems
  • The dyes and chemicals used in novelty lenses may cause allergic reactions, leading to red, irritated, and watery eyes
  • If the lenses are not properly fitted, they can shift around your eye, causing blurry or obstructed vision. In some cases, they can also increase your sensitivity to light

How to wear novelty contact lenses safely

If you’re set on using novelty contacts to complete your Halloween look, here are some steps you can take to minimise the risks.

  1. Visit an optometrist: even if you don’t need vision correction, always see your optometrist for a contact lens fitting appointment first. This ensures the lenses will fit your eyes correctly and be safe to use.
  2. Buy from reputable sources: only purchase contact lenses from licensed retailers that require a prescription. Avoid buying lenses from unregulated sources like online auction sites or market stalls.
  3. Follow proper hygiene: wash your hands before handling your lenses and follow the care instructions provided by your optometrist. Use only approved cleaning solutions—never tap water or saliva.
  4. Don’t share lenses: never share contact lenses with anyone else. Sharing lenses can spread harmful bacteria and increase the risk of eye infections.
  5. Limit wear time: Don’t wear novelty lenses for extended periods, as this can reduce the oxygen supply to your eyes. Remove them as soon as your Halloween festivities are over.
  6. Watch for symptoms: If you experience redness, pain, blurred vision or excessive tearing, remove the lenses immediately and contact your optometrist. These could be signs of a serious eye issue.

A final thought

While novelty contacts can enhance your Halloween costume, it’s essential to prioritise your eye health. Infections and damage caused by unregulated or improperly used contact lenses can lead to long-term vision problems or even permanent loss of sight.

By visiting an optometrist, purchasing from reputable sources and following proper hygiene practices, you can avoid a temporary costume accessory turning into a permanent problem for your eyes.
